Explorers Credit Union (Explorers CU) has announced that the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) has approved a field of membership expansion for the Yankton based financial institution.
With current branches in Springfield, Parkston, Tea and Yankton, SD, Explorers CU is now able to serve those who live, work, worship, volunteer or attend school in thirty counties in southeastern South Dakota and northeastern Nebraska, as well as the immediate family of existing members.
Explorers Credit Union has grown considerably from its origins in 1962 when it was chartered to serve the employees of the Yankton State Hospital. The financial institution most recently expanded their community charter in March 2019 when they went from serving six to eighteen counties. Explorers CU currently serves over 9,000 members and manages nearly $100 million in assets. This latest update will allow members from seven additional counties in South Dakota (Minnehaha, McCook, Hanson, Davison, Aurora, Charles Mix and Union) and five additional counties in Nebraska (Dixon, Dakota, Thurston, Cuming and Boyd).
The current membership expansion follows major milestones last year for the financial institution including a branch opening in Tea, SD, and a name change from Services Center Federal Credit Union to Explorers CU. “We are honored to have the opportunity to deliver our vision of financial empowerment for everyone to our expanded Explorers community,” stated April Tompkins, CEO of Explorers CU. “We look forward to helping them discover the difference.”
The Explorers CU Board of Directors adopted the charter amendment at their August board meeting. This allows individuals from these additional counties to apply for membership and for the credit union employees to serve them, immediately.
