• Celebrating 24 Years of Dedication: Honoring Marlene Beaudette’s Journey at Explorers Credit Union

  • A Fond Farewell

After 24 years of service, dedication, and heart, Explorers Credit Union bids a fond and grateful farewell to Marlene Beaudette as she enters a well-earned retirement.

The Beginning of a Meaningful Journey

Marlene began her journey with Explorers in 2001, starting at Services Center Federal Credit Union as a teller—a role that would mark the beginning of a career defined by growth, adaptability, and a deep commitment to members. Reflecting on those early days, Marlene recalls feeling both challenged and uncertain as she stepped into the role. “I was overwhelmed and not sure what I got myself into,” she shared. Yet, that moment became the foundation for everything that followed. “I succeeded and achieved so much more knowledge and the ability to move to different positions within the credit union.”

Growing Alongside Explorers

Over the years, Marlene’s career evolved alongside Explorers itself. She advanced through several roles, including Member Service Representative (MSR), New Accounts and IRA Specialist, and Supervisor over MSRs and branches, before ultimately serving in her current role as New Accounts following a title rebrand in 2020. Each transition reflected her steady growth and willingness to embrace change—always with members and teammates at the center of her work.

Then and Now: A Credit Union Transformed

When asked to describe Explorers “then versus now,” Marlene points to one of the most significant transformations she witnessed firsthand: the evolution of the teller line. “What was once a member service area with limited functions has become a full member experience team,” she explained. “We’re now able to meet the member’s needs from start to finish—no more back office work.” It’s a shift she was proud to be part of as the credit union expanded both its capabilities and its vision.

Overcoming Challenges Together

Among the many challenges Marlene saw Explorers overcome, the Yankton branch remodel stands out as a defining moment. The process required flexibility and patience as teams adjusted to temporary workspaces while construction moved forward. Looking back, Marlene reflects on the experience with pride. “We made it through the process,” she said. “What a beautiful place we have now.”

The People Who Made the Difference

What Marlene will miss most, however, isn’t a title or a task—it’s the people. She speaks fondly of the many teammates and leaders who shaped her journey, including several individuals who shared especially long chapters of Explorers’ history alongside her. She acknowledges Explorers CEO, April Tompkins, whose commitment to both members and staff left a lasting impression on everyone. Marlene also treasures the friendship, knowledge, and collaboration she shared with Tammy, who joined in 2003, and Sheila, who started in 1988. She is especially grateful for the mentorship and leadership of Jan Putnam, whose tenure dates back to 1984. Together, these ladies represent decades of shared experience and institutional knowledge—stretching back to the days when Explorers was known as Services Center Federal Credit Union. At the same time, Marlene is quick to emphasize the collective spirit that defines the credit union. “The whole team is amazing and great to work with,” she shared. “I’ll miss you all—see you on the other side of the line.”

Traditions, Community, and Connection

Some of Marlene’s most cherished memories come from the traditions that brought everyone together. She fondly recalls the Christmas season, when the team would hang handmade ornaments and enjoy the Christmas Village display. “Community,” she says simply, summing up what those moments meant to her. That same sense of connection extended beyond the branch walls through community involvement—supporting PBS fundraising efforts, volunteering at Riverboat Days, and helping build floats for the Festival of Lights Christmas Parade.

Looking Ahead to Retirement

As Marlene looks ahead to retirement, her excitement is unmistakable. She’s looking forward to traveling, spending quality time with her husband—“who knows, I may like fishing,” she jokes—reading more books, putting together puzzles, and most of all, “really watching my grandchild grow.”

Marlene leaves behind a legacy of dedication, kindness, and quiet leadership—one built on years of service, genuine care for members, and deep respect for the people she worked alongside. While we will miss seeing her each day, we are incredibly grateful for the impact she has made and the example she leaves behind.

From all of us at Explorers Credit Union:

Thank you, Marlene, for 24 unforgettable years.

We wish you nothing but joy, adventure, and happiness in this next chapter!
