What Does It Mean to Be a Cooperative?

MAY 1, 2026  |  april tompkins, ceo, explorers credit union

You are not a customer here. You are an owner.

At Explorers, being a cooperative means we exist to fill a real need in our community.

Credit unions were created for people whose financial needs were often overlooked or underserved. That purpose still guides us today. We are here to serve people who may not fit neatly into a traditional banking model and to make sure financial services are accessible, fair, and rooted in opportunity.

As a cooperative, the people who use the credit union also own it. When you open an account, you become a member‑owner, with an equal stake and an equal voice. No matter the size of your account, every member matters.

In practical terms, this means:

One member, one vote, regardless of income or balance
Decisions are made locally, with our members’ best interests in mind
Success is returned to members and the community, not taken out by outside investors

We do not exist to replace banks, but to complement them. Banks play an important role, and credit unions were designed to work alongside that system by filling gaps, offering alternatives, and ensuring people have choices when it comes to financial services. Our role is to meet needs that might otherwise go unmet and to support financial confidence at every stage of life.

Being a cooperative also means believing in shared strength. Credit unions do not compete alone. We work cooperatively with other credit unions, sharing resources and support so members can be served wherever life takes them. At its heart, a cooperative is about people helping people.

It is about shared ownership, shared responsibility, and shared success.

That is what it means to be a credit union, and why the cooperative difference continues to matter in our community.

We invite you to learn more about cooperatives and the credit union movement, a people‑first approach to financial services that focuses on access, fairness, and community impact. Being a member means you are not just using a financial institution. You are part of something designed to serve people and strengthen communities, today and for the future.

Thank you for choosing to be a part of the credit union movement.

Happy Trails
